Integrating Your Current Talents Into Your New Business

talents-into-businessLast Updated 2nd January 2017: Have you ever thought how easy it would be to have a business where all you have to do is be yourself? Well there isn’t.

Sorry to drop that bombshell but it doesn’t exist.

But what does exist is providing a service or product that already encapsulates all of your talents and qualities. This is advantageous for a number of reasons, including; You are already knowledgeable about the subject you are talking about, you will be more passionate about it if you enjoy what you do, and finally you will actually be better at it! Which means more people will purchase it or pay you in the long run and you will grow your business alot quicker than if you simply came up with something that you didn’t care about but just wanted to make money from.

Well hope that clears that up!

But seriously there is no reason why in 2016 that you can’t make a business that you love working in and displays the exact talents you have from other areas in life. Let’s say you are a great footballer, not good enough to go pro but you want to try and earn money from what you do. Well you have 10 options right out the door. You can become a sports blogger, professional sports journalist, college coach, football motivational speaker, and tons of other options. There are now people earning through Youtube for creating videos (content) on absolutely everything. If your passion is cooking and people can feel your passion through the screen, they will probably watch and share your videos. This goes for everything.

“Real” World Applications

HQ SEO LogoI hate writing that subtitle as you can make money through youtube, blogging, anything nowadays, but let’s say you don’t want to go down the content creation route but you still want to utilise your talents. Well there is someone I meet in Pittsburgh about 5 years ago who I had this conversation with. His name is Tom and he said he owned an seo company in Cardiff (United Kingdom) called HQ SEO. I said that’s great, what’s the relevance to our conversation?

He said something along the lines of the following. I am paraphrasing but its something like this.

talentI’m just good at testing. Back-testing, learning how algorithms work. I first made my money doing a lot of trading, following market trends but then decided this wasn’t really for me. I wanted to still be in business not just behind a screen all day. So I decided to see if I could rank something in Google (my name) and I couldn’t. So I tested things. I read books, I read blog posts. Decided on new strategies and at the end of about 6 months I was ranking. But the issue was I had done so much I didn’t know what worked or what didn’t.

Which brings me back to my original point. This is when I learnt the importance of data and testing theories. I now test everything and track everything. There is nothing worse than doing something successfully but then not knowing what coursed that successful outcome to happen. As a result I wanted to track and test daily. So that’s what I did. Fast forward 3 years and he’s 23, self employed and making good money doing what he is talented at.

Loop DetectorsAnother story I want to share is from a businessman that I have a lot of respect for. He now works in the security industry in the UK specialising in Loop detectors for major businesses and authorities (major being over 100 million in turnover per year.) As a result I wanted to give him a special mention, he initially started in something that was less than sexy, that was toys… Not fun toys either but the light-up tacky ones you see on Halloween and bonfire night! Those are the ones that have great margins.. They just don’t look so good.

Anyway without getting too in-depth, he single handedly solved a theft using his knowledge of securities. He is one of the greatest minds I know when it comes to solving issues and problem handling and saved that company that we both worked for in a lower level at the time, close to £100,000 in stock. That’s a lot of units of flashy toys! But anyway if you have the ability and motivation to learn something that isn’t directly related to your business, but may be in the future (his entire business is now in that industry) it can pay off very very well in the future!

Hopefully you will agree that you should do the same thing!

Utilising Technology to Make Your Life Easier

technologyOne of the first steps to bring your loved ones home from their jobs is utilising the relevant technological advancements that are available to each and everyone of us. Aside from the obvious ones such as mobiles, laptops and travel elements, you should also get creative with the new systems available to you.

So what systems am I talking about? Well there are 3 that I utilise on a daily basis for both my personal and business needs. The first is uber. If you haven’t got the Uber app yet I highly recommend downloading it and getting going. It has easily saved me countless hours when it comes to travelling short distances around a city. Utliise the app to surprise your family on a regular basis and save money on petrol and congestion costs. Uber’s are quicker, easier and essentially more convenient than even having your car… So go sell that car and invest into your business.

syma-x5cAnother tech advance I like talking about is the drone revolution. Drones or Quadcopters are small-medium sized devices that rotate to generate thrust and hence can fly anywhere within a small radius. These can be controlled by a mobile phone or by a laptop, but generally can be flown up to 5km. There is a great article at syma x5c review which talks about the Syma range and how they are taking over the drone market. The best thing about these devices is that they are in fact so cheap now for consumers. Starting at £100 and going up to £5,000. You can select a model that is most relevant for your business or personal needs. Cute messages to your family when you have to stay late will make all the difference, as will flying small items around time at 1/10th of the time it would take a taxi to get there.

Speed is everything

speedThis doesn’t just mean speed of transport, which is what we have been talking about so far. This also means speed of business growth. Which brings me onto my final technology recommendation. The first element is skype/emails to improve contact. But the important aspect is that you should be outsourcing a lot of your tasks. For this I recommend using a service like upwork or freelancer. But you should be hiring VAs (virtual assistance) as this is extremely easy to get started and you don’t have to worry about any legal elements, unlike when you hire a member of staff in your own company.

outsourcingThere are multiple advantages to outsourcing over hiring, but 2 of the primary ones include: legal elements, you don’t have to go through a long drawn out contract element or worry about setting up pensions or any of that rubbish. The second element is you can hire these people extremely fast, I recommend testing individuals before hiring them as there are very few good VAs, but if you do find one they will pay for themselves in weeks and will save you a lot of time and energy in the long run!

Hope you enjoyed.

The First Day of the Rest of Your Life

timeI was good at my old job, heck I’d even go as far to say I enjoyed it. I liked the people I worked with, but there was just something missing. Something that I initially thought was a “purpose” but I now realise was just freedom. Freedom to do the things I wanted to do, but more importantly when I wanted to do them.

Like most people I think I always wanted to be my own boss and earn 7-8-9 figures a year. But that didn’t appeal to me as much as being able to have the freedom to do what I wanted to do, when I wanted to do it. And that’s why I handed in my notice for my old job on 15th February 2006…. A sleepy Wednesday if I remember correctly.

But why am I telling you guys all this?

Well in my opinion this is when the first day of the rest of your life starts. There is a really good video I like on the subject that I’ve embed below. You can still watch this without sound if you want too. I recommend not only watching this but also taking in the message. If you are doing something for the majority of your life that you don’t want to do – That is seriously going to be bad for you! Watch below.

The overall message is what? Time is precious!!

But anyway back to my original point.

Your Life Starts – When you Quit Your Job

Bold statement but let me explain what I mean in more detail.

happyWhen you quit your job you have nothing, well nothing but one thing – MORE TIME. now what you do with this time will be the determining factor of how happy you will be. Spend your time dreaming about your ambitions and goals, but don’t actually work towards them and guess what? – You will be unhappy. I almost guarantee it.

At the same time if you work 80 hours a week but it is towards something that you care about more than anything in the world. You will be happy (and also you will most likely be successful.) It’s as Shawn Achor said in the Happiness Advantage – Success does not proceed happiness. Happiness proceeds success. If you truly believe that statement. And I mean you should because its not only proven in trials but also makes sense in the real world too, then you should do everything in your power from TODAY to make yourself HAPPY!

Greater than Happiness & Time

freedomAbove I’ve talked a lot about increasing the time and happiness you have from quitting a job you dislike. The video talks about how “work” is the majority of your life, yet there is something even greater than both happiness and time. Which I know is a bold statement and it is the following: FREEDOM.

Being free to do what you want is one of lives greatest gifts. Without being illegal, we are literally free to do whatever we want to do. We can go anywhere, do anything, swim, run, jump, crawl, bite, eat, drink whatever we want. Heck there are even things you can do that are out of this world. But one of the greatest components to the entire “quit your job” part of doing things is the freedom you have a result.

gym-leggingsThere is just so much more to life than working. Work should not be well… Work. It should be something you enjoy doing. Whether that is working on a business, or simply in a position in a job that you actually enjoy. Don’t just do something “for the money” or “for the future”. A friend of mine is now a professional model, did it happen overnight? No of course not and was it the type of modelling she wanted initially. Nope, but its getting closer and closer every shoot. She now does gym leggings modelling for companies like Ghost Fitness (pictured right) and is incredibly talented at it. Just put your mind to something and you will achieve it!

What you do with that freedom is totally up to you. Chances are part of it will need to revolve around making money to support yourself or your family, but as I mentioned in the first part of the post, there are so many things you can do now that have both enjoyment for yourself and will result in money too! It’s just finding that balance. That is what this blog is going to be about. I hope you enjoy it!

Hello and Welcome to 129 Bring Them Home

129 Bring them home is a blog set-up by myself (Travis) and my wife to talk about the issues associated with individuals working in jobs they hate. Our aim is to bring them home to their families, with enough money to do what they want to do and be who they want to be. Over the next 3+ months I will be posting about my journey and how I left my terrible job and how much happier I have been as a result. Chances are you will be able to do the same thing! I wish you the best of luck and I hope you stay around on the site!
